Full description

Beads of ground aromatic wood, rolled by hand, in four sizes.

The formula

Agarwood · Sandalwood · Cassia Twig · Borneol

Four botanicals, listed in full. No proprietary blend.

Agarwood is the resin the perfume world calls oud — among the most valuable raw materials on earth. Cassia twig is the young branch of the cinnamon tree, warmer and drier than the bark. Borneol is a crystalline camphor, named for Borneo, where it was first traded.

How the beads are made

Blended incense, not carved wood. Several botanicals are compounded into one bead, rather than beads being cut from a single block.

They are selected, hand-ground to powder in a stone mortar, sieved, and weighed. The powder is bound into a paste, then rolled between the palms one bead at a time. Nothing is moulded. No fragrance oil is sprayed onto a finished bead.

Which is why the scent does not wash off. It is not on the bead. It is the bead.

The beads come out in different tones because the blends behind them differ. Nothing on this strand is dyed.

The five phases

Wood · Fire · Earth · Metal · Water.

In English these are usually called the Chinese five elements, which is where this bracelet gets its name. The older translation is the better one: five phases.

Classical Chinese thought did not describe the world as a set of fixed substances. It described it as five phases that everything moves through — east to south to centre to west to north, spring to summer to late summer to autumn to winter. Not five things. Five stages of one thing turning.

Wood feeds fire. Fire makes earth. Earth bears metal. Metal carries water. Water grows wood again. It is a cycle with no end in it, which is what the bracelet is named for.

The bracelet

Four bead sizes. Same length throughout — what changes is the weight on the wrist.

Bead size Length Weight
8mm 20cm 9g fine — quiet, everyday
10mm 20cm 11g medium — the standard
12mm 20cm 17g full — present on the wrist
14mm 20cm 24.5g heavy — substantial, reads as menswear

Where it sits

Aromatic bead strands like this belong to the same family as meditation beads and malas. This one is a 20cm bracelet, not a 108-bead counting strand — it is made to be worn, not counted.

Contains borneol, a natural camphor. Keep away from young children.
