The formula

Agarwood · Sandalwood · Goose Pear · Shellac

The goose pear here is not a fragrance stirred into the blend. It is a step in making it, and the step is the whole point — see below. Shellac is the binder that holds the powder together before it is rolled.

Where the name comes from

Goose-pear incense, for inside the bed curtains.

The method is attributed to Li Yu, last ruler of the Southern Tang and a far better poet than he ever was a king. It is written down in Chen's Book of Incense: hollow out a goose pear, pack the cavity with agarwood powder, close it up, and steam it. The fruit's juice goes into the wood. Do it three times and the pear is spent — and the agarwood carries something that no amount of dry blending can put there.

Inside the curtains is where it was meant to be burned. Close quarters. One person, or two.

About the scent

This is not a perfume.

No alcohol, no spray, no projection. The oils live in the beads and wake with the warmth of your skin. Someone across the room will not smell it — that is the point. It is a scent for the person wearing it.

It is strongest in the first weeks and softens over the months that follow. Keep it dry; moisture is the one thing that shortens its life. If the scent quietens, warm the beads between your palms for a moment.
